What made you apply to Willoughby for your internship?
Ultimately, it was the group of talented people at Willoughby that attracted me the most. If there is one thing I am going to walk away with from this experience, it’s that human interaction is just as important as the interaction you have with your work. Anyone can design the same looking logo or business card, but it’s how you present yourself and interact with your teammates and clients that will truly separate yourself from the rest.
What surprised you the most about your internship?
The thing that surprised me most was how down-to-earth everyone was at the office. I feel like there is a growing anxiety amongst young graphic designers when it comes to starting a new role at an agency. I believe this fear stems from the thought of there being an overwhelming echo chamber of ego-fueled senior creative directors. Thankfully, the team at Willoughby are far from this. They have as much compassion as they do passion, and as much humility as they do flair.
What did you learn?
I learned many things, but one of the largest takeaways was that the life of a graphic designer is all about the balance between work and play. Most of my time at Willoughby was spent glued to the screen, however, it was balanced with fun dog walks, a day spent at the pool, and countless team lunches. Finding myself determined to admit I completed something worthwhile after a day at the office, there was another side of me determined to catch a breath so I could push even harder the next day. Willoughby has highly aware teammates to work with, if you ever feel yourself yearning for a breath, the team will do their best to support you.
